An Introvert is a person who likes to be alone rather than being in the midst of people. An introvert gains energy from being alone and loses energy in stimulating environmental conditions such as parties, crowds, excess surrounding noises. An introvert is more reserved and more interested in his or her own mental self.

Guide to Work Well in an Extrovert’s World

As an introvert, you may find it difficult to work effectively and efficiently in an extroverted office environment. Most offices and workplace are ideally set up for extroverted personalities. Open floor style of workplace is more predominant with no much privacy for introverted people to have their personal alone space.

How can you work well as an introvert in an extroverted World?

1. Find the Right Job — As an introvert, the bigger key to career success for you is to find the right job that suits your personality.

Working as a software developer, scientist, doctors, engineers, writer, and other similar jobs will make you more effective and efficient in your job.

2. Don’t Let the Environment Drain out your Energy — Introverts work best in environments with lesser stimulation or people but now you are working in an office where there are a lot of people and you have colleagues that are constantly in your space.

3. Avoid the Feeling of being “alone in the room” or being “put on the spot” — Most introverts always feel alone in their workplace. They feel no one understands them and they tend to work in solitude. They may not understand this so you need to explain to them that you need more time to think and teach them on how best to communicate with you.

4. Manage Your Time — Managing your time will help you greatly in working well in an extroverted office. You may not have all the personal space you need to be more productive as an introvert but when you effectively manage your time, it will enhance your productivity. For example, too many meetings in a week may drain out all your energy.

5. Don’t be Shy — This is very important when working in an extroverted office. Do not appear shy to your colleagues because it can make them feel uncomfortable working with you.

6. Understand your Co-workers and the Environment around you — Introverts are generally good observers, they take note of things that extroverts can’t take note of. As an introvert working in an extroverted office, be able to understand your colleagues and environment around you.

7. Manage Social Commitments — You are in a new office with new faces, while this may not be very comfortable for you, it is necessary for you to have the mentality that you are going to be involved in one or two social commitments with your colleagues.
